Puerto Princesa, often called Puerto Princesa City, and officially City of Puerto Princesa, is a city in the western provincial Palawan Island, Philippines. Though provincial seat of the government for Palawan, the city is among 38 independent cities in the Philippines that are not controlled by the province in which they are geographically located. Therefore, Puerto Princesa is an independent area within Palawan.
As of 2015 census, the city of Puerto Princesa had a population of 255,120 people, making it the least densely populated in the Philippines. In terms of area, it is the 2nd largest geographically following Davao City with an area of 2,381 km2 (919.32 ml2). Puerto Princesa is the site of the Western Command headquarters of Philippines.
Currently, Puerto Princesa is a famous tourist city with many seafood restaurants and beach resorts. It has been acclaimed many times as the greenest and cleanest city in the Philippines and is known as country's Eco-Tourism Center. In recent years, Puerto Princesa has seen an increase in the number of tourists. Many hotels, from basic to 5-star accommodations, have emerged since the 1990s to meet the growing number of tourists. There are also a large selection of bars, restaurants and shops including SM City Puerto Princesa shopping mall, Unitop mall Puerto Princesa, NCCC Mall Palawan, Robinsons Place Palawan.
Most travellers come to Puerto Princesa to see Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park, situated 50 km north of the city, which was named one of the New7Wonders of Nature. Puerto Princesa is the jump-off point to explore Tubbataha Reef.
At Port of Puerto Princesa the city is served by domestic passenger ferries to Coron, Iloilo and Manila.
