Rovinj (Rovigno) is a city in Croatia located on the north Adriatic Sea. It has a population of 14,300 and is situated on the western coast of Istrian peninsula. Rovinj is a popular tourist resort and active fishing port. The Romance language, Istriot, once spoken widely in this part of Istria, is still spoken by some of its residents. The city is officially bilingual, Croatian and Italian, hence both of its names are equal and official.
The Rovinj (Rovigno) islands are natural sights that have been described as "outstanding scenic wonders," due to the pristine beauty of its forests (consisting of oak and Alpine pine trees) and indented coastline. This area extends from Saint Ivan promontory to Barbariga, including all Rovinj islands and mainland 500 metres from the shore line. Rovinj archipelago consists of 19 isles.
