Spetses is an affluent island and municipality in Islands regional unit, Attica, Greece. Sometimes it is included as one of Saronic Islands. Until 1948, Spetses Island was part of the old Argolidocorinthia prefecture, which is now split into Corinthia and Argolis. In ancient times, Spetses was known as Pityoussa, later as Petses.
Today the island is an independent municipality with a population of 4,030 inhabitants, with no internal boundaries within municipality's territory. The town of Spetses (population 4,000 in 2011) is island's only large settlement. The other settlements are Moni Agion Panton, Ligoneri, Agioi Anargyroi, Kouzounos. Also part of Spetses municipality are the islands of Falkonera, Velopoula and Spetsopoula (all uninhabited). The total municipality area of Spetses Island is 27.121 km2 (10.471 ml2).
An unusual side of Spetses is the lack of private automobiles in town limits. The most common methods of transport are walking, bicycles, mopeds, motorcycles and horse-drawn carriages. Only delivery vehicles and taxis are allowed in downtown area. High-speed hydrofoils and ferries arrive regularly from Piraeus.
Beaches closest to the town include: Agios Mamas (situated in the center), Kaíki beach (1 km /0.6 miles to the northwest), Agia Marina (2 km /1 mile to the south), offering water sports. The beaches are served by public buses further outside of town.
