Tonle Sap, (literally large river - tonle; not salty, fresh - sap; commonly translated as "Great Lake") refers to seasonally inundated freshwater lake, Tonle Sap Lake and attached river, 120-km (75-mile) long Tonle Sap River, which connects the lake to Mekong. They form the central part of a hydrological system, located in the 12,876 km2 (4,971 ml2) Cambodian floodplain covered with natural and agricultural habitats which the Mekong annually replenishes with sediments and water. The central plain formation was the result of millions of years Mekong alluvial discharge and deposition. From geological perspective, Tonle Sap Lake and Tonle Sap River are a freeze-frame representation of the slowly, ever shifting Lower Mekong Basin. The fluctuation of Mekong's water volume, along with the Asian Monsoon regime, caused the unique flow reversal of Tonle Sap River.
Tonle Sap Lake occupies a geological depression of the vast alluvial and lacustrine floodplain in Lower Mekong Basin, induced by the collision of the Eurasian Plate with the Indian Plate. The lake's length, size and water volume varies over the course of a year from an area of 2,500 km2, a volume of 1 km3 and a length of 160 km at the end of the dry season late April to an area of up to 16,000 km2, a volume of 80 km3 and a length of 250 km as the Mekong maximum and peak of South-West monsoon's precipitation culminate, September and early October.
The largest Southeast Asian freshwater lake, that contains an exceptional variety of interconnected eco-regions with high degree of biodiversity was designated as UNESCO biosphere reserve in 1997.
