Union Island is part of St. Vincent and the Grenadines' nation. It lies around 200 km (124 miles) south-west of Barbados and is within view of Carriacou island and Grenada's mainland, which lie to the south. The two principal towns are Ashton and Clifton. Union Island is home to around 3,000 residents. English is the official language, but German and French are spoken in Clifton by some merchants as well.
Union Island has an international airport with domestic flights to St. Vincent and some of Grenadines and international flights to Carriacou, Barbados, Martinique and Grenada.
Because of its volcanic silhouette, Union Island is also called "Tahiti of the West Indies". The island is about 3 miles (4.8 km) long and 1 mile (1.6 km) wide. Mount Taboi is the highest peak - 999 ft (304 m) above sea level.
After the Arawak and Caribs, island's original settlers, Union has been in possession of English and French slave traders and plantation proprietors who brought many Africans to the island. Sea Island Cotton was a major export crop and Sea Island cotton trees are still found on the island (Bougainvillia complex beside Anchorage Yacht Club in Clifton Harbour is a good example).
When slavery was abolished, the inhabitants still relied on fishing and farming. As a result, lots of men went to work on freighters in order to support families. During the late 1970s Union Island was the centre of political unrest when a group of its residents were in favour of separation from St. Vincent and the Grenadines and merger with Grenada. The riot was put down by forces of the government.
Today, yacht services and day-chartering businesses provide a lot of jobs. Union Island has a dive operator, numerous bars, restaurants, boutiques, supermarkets and internet cafes. There are several guest houses and hotels on Union Island, as well as a small health clinic, schools and churches. Happy Island (a man-made island with its own bar) is in the middle of Clifton harbour.
