Marella Voyager (1997-built as "Celebrity Mercury", last refurbished in 2017 as "Mein Schiff 2", in 2019 as "Mein Schiff Herz", and in 2023 as "Marella Voyager") is the second-oldest TUI ship and one of the Century-class liners, preceded by Mein Schiff 1 (launched as Celebrity Galaxy, now Marella Explorer) and Celebrity Century (now Marella Explorer 2). The vessel was originally built for Royal Caribbean’s brand Celebrity Cruises, renamed "Celebrity Mercury" in 2008, and joined the TUI fleet in 2011 as Mein Schiff 2. The shipowner and operator, TUI Cruises, is an RCCL subsidiary and a German joint venture between TUI AG (travel corporation) and Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd (RCCL) — the world’s second-largest passenger shipping company (after Carnival).
Since June 3, 2023, TUI’s Schiff Herz has operated for TUI UK’s Marella Cruises under the name "Marella Voyager." Marella Voyager’s first drydock refurbishment was scheduled for April 2023.
The TUI Mein Schiff Herz cruise ship deck plan shows a total of 956 cabins for 1,912 passengers (maximum capacity 2,669), served by 900 crew. The ship has 13 decks (10 passenger-accessible, 6 with cabins), 6 restaurants, 2 bistros, 10 bars, 3 lounges, 2 swimming pools (plus 1 kids’ pool), 3 outdoor Jacuzzis, 10 elevators, and no casino.
Marella Voyager refurbishment 2023 review
The ship’s first drydock refurbishment under Marella UK was in 2023 (April–May), conducted at the Navantia Shipyard in Cadiz, Spain.
This 33-day full-scale refit included the addition of many of Marella’s signature venues, facilities, and amenities, along with several new-to-the-brand venues such as Abuela’s (Mexican restaurant) and The Speakeasy Bar.
The project also involved a complete machinery and systems overhaul, as well as superstructure and hull cleaning and repainting.
The refurbishment was supervised by the UK-based interior outfitting company Trimline Group, led by Naomi Cooper (Director of Projects, Trimline Ltd/on-site management). It involved around 180 workers and contractors, including electricians, decorators, upholsterers, floor layers, joiners, laborers, hard-surface repair specialists, polishers, plumbers, welders, HVAC technicians, and other tradespeople.
Among the new spaces is The Exchange — Marella’s first — featuring an Art Deco bar with a classic speakeasy ambiance, as well as The Flutes, a champagne bar. The renovations also included LED lighting installations by GDS Pioneering Light (Bristol, England-based manufacturer).
Trimline redesigned multiple areas, including Squid & Anchor, two restaurants (Latitude and Vista), the new Santorini and St. Lucia-themed suites, Destination Experiences, Dining Club, M Club, and over 900 passenger cabins.
All public areas received new carpeting, while the Broadway Show Lounge was completely renovated. The Electric Rooms (bar/lounge, nightclub, and former casino) received a state-of-the-art LED dance floor.
