MS Bolette (2000-built as "MS Amsterdam", last refurbished in 2023 by Fred Olsen, and in 2018 by HAL) is the fourth and final Rotterdam/R-class Holland America Line ship—together with ms Rotterdam (now Fred Olsen Borealis) (sistership), ms Volendam, and ms Zaandam. The vessel joined the Fred Olsen Cruise Lines fleet in September 2020.
HAL Amsterdam / Fred Olsen Bolette deck plan shows a total of 690 staterooms for 1,338 passengers (maximum capacity 1,656), served by 615 crew. The ship has 10 passenger-accessible decks (5 with cabins), 11 lounges and bars, 6 restaurants, 2 swimming pools (one with retractable glass roof), 2 outdoor Jacuzzis, and 12 elevators.
MS Amsterdam deck plan changes – 2018 refurbishment review
During drydock (April 29–May 9, 2018, at Freeport, Bahamas), MS Amsterdam received the following Suite upgrades:
- New furnishings (sofas, chairs, headboards), carpeting, wall coverings, privacy curtains, draperies, bed runners, bed skirts, make-up vanities (quartz stone tops, modern lighting), dressers, dressing tables, nightstands, LED reading lights, and wardrobes with lighted closet rods
- Updated amenities and décor (espresso coffee machine, binoculars, complimentary mimosas with in-cabin breakfast)
- USB outlet (on the bed’s headboard), additional power outlets, LED ceiling lights
- BOSE SoundDock (iPod docking station) added in PS-Pinnacle Suites only
- Interactive HDTV system with Internet access and free movies on demand
- Complete renovation of all Suite bathrooms
- The old Crow’s Nest (panoramic lounge forward on Deck 9) was replaced by EXC (Explorations Central).
The 2018 refurbishment was part of Holland America Line’s USD 300 million fleetwide renovation program (2016–2018), which also upgraded onboard entertainment, dining, and Suites across the fleet.
In 2016, Holland America updated MS Amsterdam’s onboard programming (enrichment, entertainment, and children’s activities), replacing “Dancing With the Stars” with “BBC Earth” content.
The theater lounge began hosting daily expert lectures, presentations, and a nature-themed game show with BBC Earth screenings, introduced by the crews who filmed them. A signature evening concert was inspired by the “Frozen Planet” program (polar regions-themed)—a multimedia production with live musicians.
Children’s (Club HAL) facilities were enhanced with an explorer trail, workshops (including journalism and filming), and educational shows (on animals, dinosaurs, etc.).
Holland America-themed cruises also featured behind-the-scenes access to BBC Earth filmmakers, who shared media and stories. Children could participate in filming workshops.
