MS Volendam (1999-built, last refurbished in October–November 2024) is the second of the four Rotterdam/R-class Holland America Line ships, together with ms Zaandam (sistership), ms Amsterdam (now Fred Olsen Bolette), and ms Rotterdam (now Fred Olsen Borealis). MS Volendam is named after a town in the Northern Holland region.
The Volendam deck plan shows a total of 716 staterooms accommodating 1432 passengers (maximum capacity 1718), served by 650 crew and staff. The ship has 10 passenger-accessible decks (5 with cabins), 15 lounges and bars, 2 swimming pools (one with a retractable glass roof), 2 outdoor Jacuzzis, and 12 elevators.
In 2016, Holland America Line updated Volendam’s shipboard enrichment, entertainment, and children’s programming, replacing “Dancing With the Stars” with “BBC Earth” content.
- The Theater hosts daily expert lectures, presentations, and a nature-themed game show featuring BBC Earth screenings, introduced by the crews who filmed the series. A signature evening concert is based on the polar-themed “Frozen Planet” program, presented as a multimedia show with live musicians.
- The children’s club facilities feature an explorer trail, workshops (including journalism and filming), and fact-based shows on animals and dinosaurs.
- HAL’s themed cruises offer access to BBC Earth series creators, who share behind-the-scenes media and stories. Children may also participate in filming workshops.
