MS Nieuw Statendam (2018-built, last refurbished in 2023 November) is the second Pinnacle-Class liner in the Holland America fleet, with sisterships Koningsdam (2016) and Rotterdam (2021). The ship’s name honors HAL’s MS Statendam, which was sold in 2018 to CMV (later defunct). Pinnacle-Class liners are the newest and largest vessels in HAL’s fleet.
The Nieuw Statendam deck plan shows a total of 1339 staterooms for 2666 passengers (max capacity 3214) served by 1025 crew. The ship has 13 passenger-accessible decks (8 with cabins), 17 lounges and bars, 2 swimming pools (one with a retractable glass roof), 5 Jacuzzies (outdoor whirlpools), and 12 elevators.
The ship does not have self-service laundry facilities (passenger-use laundrettes/laundromats). Laundry service is provided by the hotel staff at an additional charge.
The list of signature activities and amenities available at sea only on Holland America ships includes:
- Itinerary-themed specialty teas and snacks – Afternoon Tea features a culturally inspired selection of locally sourced teas, paired with regional sweets and savories. Creamy milkshakes are also served.
- Traditional Dutch pea soup (with pork), served outdoors only on cold-weather itineraries. Steaming mugs of soup are offered on the pool deck while the ship sails in regions such as Alaska or Norway’s fjords.
- All HAL ships sail with a Catholic priest and offer daily non-denominational services.
- “BB King’s Blues Club” (Plaza Deck 2) presents nightly live music by an 8-member band (three shows per evening). This themed venue is also featured on Eurodam, Nieuw Amsterdam, Noordam, Oosterdam, Rotterdam, Westerdam, and Zuiderdam.
- The digital edition of the “New York Times” is available free of charge via HAL’s media partnership and can be accessed on the Explorations Café computers.
- Signature recipes by celebrity chefs – many MDR (Main Dining Room) dishes are created by HAL’s “Culinary Council” of six renowned chefs. Among them are Jacques Torres (“Mr. Chocolate”), Jonnie Boer (Michelin-star chef and co-owner of De Librije in Holland), David Burke (“Iron Chef America”), and HAL’s Master Chef Rudolf “Rudi” Sodamin.
Holland America Nieuw Statendam’s shipboard programming (enrichment, entertainment, and children’s activities) is based on “BBC Earth” content.
- The ship’s theatre hosts daily expert lectures, presentations, and a nature-themed game show featuring BBC Earth footage with introductions by the filmmakers. A signature evening concert is based on the “Frozen Planet” series (polar regions), presented as a multimedia production with live musicians.
- The children’s club includes an explorer trail, workshops (such as journalism and filming), and fact-based shows about animals and dinosaurs.
- HAL’s themed cruises offer access to BBC Earth creators, behind-the-scenes stories, and media sessions. Children can participate in filming workshops.
