MS Rotterdam (2021-built, fka “Nieuw Ryndam”, last refurbished in 2023) is the 3rd Pinnacle-class liner in the Holland America fleet, with sisterships Koningsdam (2016) and Nieuw Statendam (2018). Pinnacle-class vessels are the newest and largest in HAL’s fleet.
MS Rotterdam’s deck plan includes a total of 1340 staterooms for 2668 passengers (maximum capacity 3218), served by 1025 crew. The ship has 13 passenger-accessible decks (8 with cabins), 11 dining venues, 17 lounges and bars, 2 swimming pools (one with a retractable glass roof), 5 Jacuzzies (outdoor whirlpool hot tubs) and 12 elevators.
The ship has no self-service laundry rooms (passenger-use laundrettes/laundromats). Laundry services are provided by the hotel staff for an additional charge.
Signature activities and amenities available exclusively on Holland America ships include:
- Itinerary-themed specialty teas and snacks – Afternoon Tea service delivers a unique cultural experience featuring locally sourced teas paired with regional sweets and savories. Creamy milkshakes are also available.
- Traditional Dutch pea soup (with pork), served outdoors only on cold-weather itineraries. Steaming mugs of soup are offered on the pool deck while the ship sails in regions such as Alaska or Norway’s fjords.
- All HAL ships have a Catholic priest onboard and offer daily non-denominational services.
- “BB King’s Blues Club” (nightclub on Plaza Deck 2) features an 8-piece band with live evening performances (three shows per night).
- The “New York Times” digital edition is available for free through HAL’s partnership with the publication, accessible on computers at the Explorations Café.
- Signature recipes by celebrity chefs – many MDR (main dining room) dishes are created by the line’s “Culinary Council,” consisting of six chefs. Among the international chefs contributing signature dishes (and often present onboard) are Jacques Torres (“Mr. Chocolate”), Jonnie Boer (Michelin-star chef, co-owner of De Librije in the Netherlands), David Burke (“Iron Chef America”) and HAL’s master chef Rudolf “Rudi” Sodamin.
Holland America Rotterdam’s shipboard programming (enrichment, entertainment and children’s activities) is based on “BBC Earth” content.
- The theater hosts daily expert lectures, presentations, a nature-themed game show, and BBC Earth screenings with introductions by the filmmakers. A signature evening concert based on the “Frozen Planet” series (polar regions-themed) features a spectacular multimedia performance accompanied by live musicians.
- The children’s club facilities include an explorer trail, journalism and filming workshops, and fact-based shows on animals and dinosaurs.
- HAL’s themed cruises offer access to BBC Earth creators, including behind-the-scenes media and stories. Children may participate in filming workshops.
