Port Tarragona (Spain) has released a notice on its contracting platform, outlining upcoming construction projects that will be put up for tender in the following months. One of these projects is the development of the Balears Wharf logistics zone.

Through these initiatives, the Port Authority aims to enhance various aspects of the logistics zone, such as pedestrian pavements, traffic flow, parking areas, and bus stops. They also plan to incorporate environmentally friendly features, such as pergolas with solar panels, landscaped areas with low water consumption Mediterranean species, and vertical signage. The projected timeline for completion is 4 months after the tenders have been accepted and the projects awarded, with a budget of EUR 0,7 million before taxes.

The main objective of this project is to create an adaptable and sustainable wharf, with a particular focus on improving vessel operations while prioritizing sustainability. The area will be equipped with sustainable energy through the installation of photovoltaic panels and LED lighting on the pergolas, promoting the use of solar power for electricity generation and lighting purposes.

Additionally, the plan includes adapting the stormwater surface drainage in parking and crossroads areas to ensure proper water distribution and avoid accumulation issues. To improve cruise passenger operations, pedestrian pavements will be constructed to provide safe and convenient routes, while new signage will be installed to guide traffic and organize vehicle transit efficiently.

All these efforts are being coordinated with the construction of the new cruise terminal, which is already in progress with the assistance of Global Ports Holding, the company holding the concession for cruise liner operations. The goal is to complete the Balears Wharf logistics zone around the same time as the cruise terminal, expected to be in the second quarter of 2024. The Balears Wharf, inaugurated in October 2021, was designed to accommodate up to four of the world's largest passenger liners simultaneously.
