VIDEO: Carnival Magic ship damages the cruise pier in Ocho Rios (Jamaica)

   February 7, 2024 ,   Accidents

The cruise ship Carnival Magic, currently hosting the ShipRocked cruise, encountered adverse weather conditions upon her arrival at Ocho Rios, Jamaica.

On February 6, strong winds and swells resulted in the collapse of the pier fender under pressure when the CCL-Carnival ship made contact. This allision caused significant damage to both the docking structure and the vessel’s hull.

Fortunately, there were no reported injuries among the passengers or crew.

Carnival Magic arrived in Ocho Rios ahead of schedule due to a change in itinerary prompted by adverse weather conditions. Captain La Farina, the ship's Master, promptly informed guests about the situation. Carnival Magic is scheduled to remain in Ocho Rios until 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday.

In response to the accident, the Captain issued a notification to guests, providing updates and explaining the necessity of sailing out to sea for safety reasons. The notification reassured guests about the safety of the ship and the operational hotel services, although other onboard services were temporarily suspended. Furthermore, efforts were underway to coordinate with local partners and the Fleet Operations Center (Miami) to facilitate the timely return of stranded passengers to the ship.

"The ship is safe, and all hotel services are operational. We need the support of some of our team members as we work through standard procedures for this situation. Therefore, in the meantime, services are temporarily closed. We are now in contact with our local partners and our Fleet Operations Center and are working through plans to get our guests who are ashore back on board as soon as possible.

"We will keep you updated as more information becomes available. If you have contact with any one ashore, please ask them to check their e-mail, ShipRocked App and ShipRocked Guest Facebook Group for updates. We apologize for this unexpected change and thank you for your patience and understanding."
