The Port of Cork Company (PoCC) inaugurated cruise season 2024 with the arrival of MS Ambition (operated by Ambassador Cruise Line) on Thursday, April 4th.

As the vessel docked on its inaugural voyage to Cork Harbour, part of its 12-day 'Easter British Isles Discovery' roundtrip, she marked the commencement of what appears to be a prosperous year for the cruise industry in Cork.

The Port's 2024 cruise schedule forecasts a 10% rise in berth bookings, with an impressive 103 cruise vessels scheduled to arrive between April and November 2024. Additionally, 24 cruise liners are anticipated to visit Bantry Bay Harbour this year, up from 9 cruise ships in 2023.

Cruise ship tourism remains a significant economic driver for the local economy, estimated to generate EUR 17 million in revenue. Onshore spending averages at EUR 81 per passenger and EUR 29 per crew member, underscoring the substantial economic benefits for the region.

The cruise season brings excitement, local tourism, and foot traffic as visitors and families admire the sheer magnitude of vessels from the deepwater quay in Cobh. This year's shipping schedule, available online, includes vessels traveling to Cork from various countries, including the US, Canada, and across Europe.

Following tradition, a plaque exchange occurred on board between the ship's captain and Port of Cork Company representatives.

The Ambition's arrival sets the stage for a diverse lineup of cruise ships expected throughout the season from across the globe.
