The Port of Volos (Greece) has completed an extensive dredging campaign this spring, restoring its cruise pier to a navigable depth of –11 metres following the debris inflow from the devastating 2023 floods—an influx of over 700,000 m³ that had stranded vessels and forced cancellations.
On June 12, 2025, the port welcomed the Norwegian Viva, a 293‑metre cruise ship with a draft exceeding 7.5 metres, carrying 3,352 passengers and 1,469 crew, marking Volos’s official return to full cruise operations.
Port Authority officials have confirmed that the reestablished depth once again allows large vessels to approach safely. A new bathymetric survey, scheduled for late June by the Hydrographic Service, will provide updated charts to cruise operators, reaffirming the port’s renewed readiness.
Norwegian Viva’s arrival underlines Volos’s restored capacity in the Mediterranean cruise network after months of interruption.
The Port Authority has extended invitations to cruise lines to resume operations and adjust itineraries accordingly, emphasizing the port’s full restoration and its commitment to offering safe, efficient service. With its operational depth reinstated, Volos once again positions itself as a dependable port of call in the region.
