National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions is preparing to expand its exploration portfolio into European river cruising.
Beginning in 2026, the company will launch voyages along the Rhine River, followed by an expanded program in 2027 with the introduction of a second vessel, extending its presence across Europe’s principal waterways.
The forthcoming itineraries are designed to redefine river cruising through a focus on deliberate, unhurried exploration. The company has indicated that its European river program will emphasize meaningful engagement with local cultures and landscapes rather than traditional sightseeing. Each voyage is intended to foster a deeper understanding of the regions visited, combining the expertise of National Geographic guides with Lindblad’s focus on experiential travel.
The first vessel, Connect, will debut in 2026. The 2025-built (chartered from Transcend Cruises) 120-passenger ship will operate exclusively on the Rhine River. With a design centered on sustainability, comfort, and intimacy, Connect will provide panoramic views of the river’s vineyards, medieval fortresses, and historic towns. Its itineraries will include calls at significant cultural and historical sites, offering guests an opportunity to experience the heritage of the Rhine in depth.
In 2027, the fleet will expand with the introduction of Evolve, also chartered from Transcend Cruises. Evolve will complement Connect during the spring and summer seasons but will also introduce winter operations, marking a first for the brand. During the colder months, Evolve will operate festive itineraries, including Christmas Markets and holiday-themed cruises through Europe’s most atmospheric river cities. These sailings will showcase destinations such as Cologne, Strasbourg, and Vienna, allowing travelers to experience Europe’s traditional markets, culinary specialties, and seasonal customs.
Beyond Europe, Lindblad continues to broaden its river cruise operations globally, with new itineraries planned along the Brahmaputra in India aboard Charaidew II, the Mekong in Vietnam on The Jahan, and the Nile in Egypt aboard Oberoi Philae. Each of these expeditions highlights the company’s mission to provide sustainable, culturally enriched journeys on some of the world’s most storied rivers.
