A Dhaleshwari River-deployed ferryboat in the Baktaboli area (Narayanganj district, central Bangladesh, Greater Dhaka) lost control of a loaded vehicle. The accident occurred shortly after the boat departed late on Saturday evening.
As a result, multiple vehicles fell into the water while the ferry was crossing mid-river between the eastern Baktaboli dock and Narsinghpur. A loaded truck apparently started moving forward, pushing a motorcycle, two battery-run auto-rickshaws, and a van overboard before it also fell into the river.
All five vehicles subsequently sank beneath the river surface.
Maritime and river police reports state that three occupants of the submerged vehicles were later confirmed deceased following search and rescue efforts conducted through the early hours of Sunday morning. The individuals identified were a 30-year-old expatriate based in Singapore, a 35-year-old motorcyclist, and a 25-year-old van driver.
Rescue sources indicate that the driver of the truck managed to swim to shore, while others on board at the time—including a van driver—remained unaccounted for at the time operations were scaled back for the night. Recovery efforts for any additional missing persons and the sunken vehicles were planned to resume with daylight.
Officials from the local river police outpost and the additional superintendent of police for Narayanganj stated that an investigation had been initiated to determine the precise sequence of events leading to the uncontrolled movement of the truck and the subsequent loss of the vehicles into the water.
