Viking River Cruises resumes Nile operations amid regional tensions

Viking River Cruises announced that it would resume Nile River cruises on March 12th, following an earlier decision to suspend all departures for the remainder of March. The cruise line cited ongoing monitoring of the U.S.-Iran conflict, consultations with long-standing ground operators in Egypt, and current U.S. State Department travel guidance as factors in its decision to reinstate sailings.

Viking clarified that official travel advisories for Egypt have remained unchanged since the onset of the regional tensions. While certain areas—including northern and central Sinai and sections of the Western Desert—are under longstanding Level 4 “do not travel” guidance, most of the country continues to fall under the Level 2 advisory, which advises Americans to exercise increased caution. The U.S. Embassy in Cairo confirmed on March 4th that it is operating normally.

Other operators have taken more conservative approaches this month. Avalon Waterways paused all Egypt operations through March, while Tauck canceled several land-cruise itineraries, including segments of its Egypt: Jewels of the Nile and Jordan & Egypt: Petra to the Pyramids programs. AmaWaterways has also suspended Jordan and Dubai extensions through March 31st.

Viking, with a fleet of 8 ships operating along the Nile, remains the largest Western cruise operator in Egypt, positioning the line to resume itineraries in coordination with local partners and established safety protocols.
