The Port of Cork Company marked the commencement of its 2026 cruise season on April 13th with the arrival of AIDAluna on its inaugural call to Cork Harbour. The call represents the first of 93 scheduled vessel visits between April and November, with total passenger numbers expected to exceed 175,000 over the course of the season.

The port, the busiest cruise gateway in the Republic of Ireland, continues to maintain a strong position within the international cruise market. In addition to calls at Cork Harbour, Bantry Bay is scheduled to receive 11 cruise vessels during the year, beginning later in April.

Cruise activity remains a significant contributor to the regional economy, with annual expenditure estimated at approximately EUR 17 million. Passenger and crew spending ashore supports a broad range of local enterprises, including retail, hospitality, transport and cultural services. Average onshore expenditure is estimated at EUR 81 per passenger and EUR 29 per crew member.

The arrival of AIDAluna, carrying more than 2,000 passengers and over 600 crew, forms part of a programme that includes six maiden calls during the season. The schedule encompasses a range of vessel types, from large contemporary ships to luxury and expedition units, representing operators from Europe and North America. Port calls are distributed across Cobh, Ringaskiddy and the quays of Cork City.

Ann Doherty, chief executive of the port company and chair of Cruise Ireland, indicated that the opening of the season represents a key point in the annual operational cycle, noting that the port continues to record consistent demand and that cruise tourism contributes positively to local businesses and communities. She further stated that, as the only Irish port equipped with a dedicated cruise terminal, Cork remains focused on presenting its facilities to cruise operators and strengthening its position as a destination within global itineraries, supported by cooperation with industry partners.

Colin Morehead, representing the Cobh and Harbour Chamber, observed that cruise calls contribute to economic activity throughout the town of Cobh, with benefits extending across hospitality, retail and local services. He noted that visiting passengers continue to seek out regional attractions, including local cuisine, cultural offerings and coastal landscapes, contributing to sustained seasonal activity.
