Virgin Voyages has presented a new digital development in the form of Rovey, an artificial intelligence-based crew assistant designed to guide passengers through the preparatory stages of a voyage. The introduction was made during Google Cloud Next, where the company outlined its approach to integrating advanced technology into the cruise booking process.
Rovey is intended to function as both a virtual crew member and a planning tool, assisting prospective guests in navigating itinerary choices, accommodation categories, and onboard experiences. The system is expected to be integrated into the company’s website, where it will provide tailored recommendations based on individual travel preferences, pace, and interests. Its role extends to maintaining continuity throughout the planning process by retaining user inputs and refining suggestions accordingly.
The assistant represents the first operational component of Project Ruby, an artificial intelligence platform developed in collaboration with Google Cloud. Built using enterprise-level AI frameworks, including advanced data and language models, the platform is designed to support travellers from initial inspiration through to confirmed booking, reducing the complexity traditionally associated with cruise planning.
Company representatives indicated that the concept behind Rovey reflects an effort to replicate the attentiveness typically associated with onboard service. It was explained that the system is structured to anticipate passenger needs, offer curated shore excursion options, and provide guidance on practical considerations such as packing or itinerary selection without requiring repeated input from the user.
Further commentary from the company emphasized that the assistant is intended to create a more continuous and personalised engagement with travellers, aligning the pre-departure experience with the standards of service delivered at sea. From the perspective of the technology partner, the collaboration was described as a means of applying scalable artificial intelligence tools to streamline booking processes while strengthening customer interaction through tailored recommendations.
Rovey is the first of several planned applications under Project Ruby, with additional developments expected to extend across the full passenger journey, from initial enquiry to the voyage itself.
