The Government of The Bahamas has outlined a US$450 million terminal development to be undertaken by MSC Cruises at Freeport Harbor on Grand Bahama, marking a further stage in the island’s ongoing expansion as a cruise destination. The facility is to be constructed on an existing artificial island within the harbour limits, extending the operational capacity of one of the country’s principal ports.

The proposed works include the installation of multiple berths capable of accommodating several vessels simultaneously, thereby increasing both ship calls and passenger throughput. Plans also provide for reception areas incorporating food, retail, and entertainment facilities, together with a transport coordination centre intended to regulate the movement of passengers from quay to inland destinations. The arrangement is designed to improve both the handling of arriving traffic and the distribution of visitors across the island.

The investment follows a series of developments that have altered the profile of Grand Bahama within regional cruise itineraries. Among these is Celebration Key, established by CCL-Carnival Cruise Line, which has contributed to increased call volumes and introduced shore-based infrastructure aligned with cruise operations.

With the addition of the MSC terminal, Freeport is expected to assume a greater share of Caribbean cruise movements, supported by expanded berthing and improved landside coordination. The anticipated rise in passenger numbers is likely to extend activity beyond the port perimeter, with tour operators and associated businesses positioned to receive a larger flow of visitors.

Taken together, these works form part of a broader programme of investment across the Bahamian archipelago, as the country consolidates its standing within the Caribbean cruise sector through expanded infrastructure and sustained engagement with major operators.
