HAL-Holland America Line extends European cruises with year-round deployment through Winter 2028

HAL-Holland America Line is expanding its European deployment into a continuous year-round programme, extending operations beyond the traditional summer season and positioning Europe as a destination to be experienced throughout winter and early spring.

The expanded 2027–2028 schedule keeps Nieuw Statendam in Europe continuously, adding capacity and longer seasonal coverage across both Northern Europe and the Mediterranean.

The programme introduces a dozen voyages aboard Nieuw Statendam across the offseason period, increasing HAL's European port presence by 70+ additional port days compared with 2026. The deployment is complemented by two additional European voyages aboard Zuiderdam, broadening itinerary choice for travellers seeking alternatives to peak-season cruising.

Rather than presenting Europe solely as a summer destination, the expanded schedule is structured around seasonal experiences and slower rhythms of travel. Northern Europe is positioned through holiday and Christmas market voyages, while Mediterranean itineraries shift toward longer stays, reduced congestion and extended time ashore in a broader range of ports.

The holiday programme aboard Nieuw Statendam incorporates voyages with overnight stays and late departures intended to allow access to Christmas markets, downtowns and local seasonal customs.

Baltic and Scandinavian itineraries include calls in Stockholm, Helsinki, Hamburg and Copenhagen, while additional sailings explore southern Norway and the Elbe River corridor during the festive period.

Following the winter holiday period, deployment moves south into the Mediterranean and Canary Islands, where the company expands access to destinations across Spain, France, Italy and Greece. The seasonal structure includes both shorter regional sailings and longer Collectors’ Voyages of up to 24 days, offering opportunities for extended exploration through combined itineraries and multiple overnight calls.

Across the Mediterranean programme, guests gain access to destinations including Valencia, Marseille, Livorno, Naples, Mykonos, Rhodes and Kusadasi, with selected overnight stays enabling more time ashore and a less compressed approach to touring. Canary Islands itineraries further extend the winter footprint through calls in Morocco and Spain before repositioning within the wider European network.

Paul Grigsby, vice president of deployment and itinerary planning for Holland America Line, indicated that Europe remains among the company’s strongest destinations and that the decision to operate year-round reflects confidence in demand beyond the established summer cycle. He noted that winter travel offers a different maritime experience, shaped by seasonal atmosphere, fewer crowds and stronger opportunities for local engagement.

The expanded deployment reflects a broader evolution in European cruising strategy, where longer seasons and region-specific experiences increasingly complement traditional peak-season concentration. For Holland America Line, maintaining a European presence through winter and early spring creates a programme built around continuity of access and a more varied understanding of the continent’s changing character across the year.
