Carnival Corporation has marked a significant operational milestone by introducing liquefied natural gas (LNG) bunkering to Latin America and the Western Caribbean. The operation was carried out at Isla Tropicale in Roatán, Honduras, where CCL-Carnival Cruise Line’s Carnival Jubilee was refuelled using a mobile LNG bunkering solution, establishing a new fuel-supply capability for the region.
The development strengthens Roatán’s role within Carnival Corporation’s Caribbean network and positions Isla Tropicale as a strategic location along Western Caribbean itineraries. The island’s geographic location allows LNG-powered vessels to replenish fuel supplies with minimal deviation from scheduled routes, supporting operational efficiency and voyage planning.
Carnival Corporation indicated that the achievement formed part of its wider decarbonisation strategy, with LNG serving as one of several measures aimed at reducing emissions from ship operations while progressing toward its long-term objective of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050. Company representatives noted that the introduction of LNG bunkering in the region reflected extensive planning and coordination across its global operations and would support key itineraries while expanding access to lower-emission fuel infrastructure.
Officials from Honduras described the operation as an important step in establishing the country’s role within the future maritime energy landscape of the Western Caribbean. They noted that the project reinforced Roatán’s strategic position, supported broader energy and economic development objectives, and demonstrated the benefits of cooperation between public authorities and private industry.
LNG remains one of the most widely available lower-emission marine fuels currently in commercial use. According to Carnival Corporation, its adoption can reduce direct carbon emissions by up to 20% while significantly lowering emissions of sulphur oxides, nitrogen oxides and particulate matter. The company was the first cruise operator to introduce LNG-powered ships in 2018 and currently operates 11 LNG-capable vessels, with a further 7 expected to join the fleet by the end of 2033.
The bunkering milestone also reflects Carnival Corporation’s long-term investment in Roatán. Since the opening of Isla Tropicale in 2009, the company has invested ~US$93 million in the destination. During that period, the facility has welcomed nearly nine million visitors and generated an estimated US$750 million in economic impact for the island, while supporting more than 1,300 local jobs linked to tourism, transportation and excursion services.
Environmental initiatives have accompanied that investment. Isla Tropicale’s beach received the Honduras Blue Flag Award in both 2024 and 2025, earning one of only two five-star ratings awarded in the country for standards related to environmental management, water quality, safety, accessibility and sustainable tourism.
The successful refuelling of Carnival Jubilee represents the first cruise-ship LNG bunkering operation in Latin America and the Western Caribbean, extending LNG infrastructure into a region that continues to grow in importance for both cruise deployment and maritime energy development.
