Italian police arrested a 34-year-old man from Taranto at the Port of Naples shortly before he was due to board a Mediterranean cruise with his family, executing a pre-trial detention order issued as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged drug trafficking activities.
According to Italian authorities, Vito Rizzo was intercepted by officers from the Taranto Flying Squad at the cruise terminal before embarkation. The detention order stems from an investigation into suspected narcotics trafficking in Taranto's Salinella district.
The investigation began following a police operation on May 19th, during which officers searched an apartment believed to be linked to the alleged trafficking network. During the operation, police reportedly caught a 19-year-old man allegedly selling narcotics and seized 65 doses of cocaine, a quantity of hashish and more than EUR 700 in cash believed to represent proceeds from drug sales. Investigators also recovered a shoulder bag containing handwritten notes that they believe recorded work schedules and financial records connected to the alleged operation.
Authorities said Rizzo was not present during the May search but subsequently appeared before an investigating judge for a preliminary hearing, a procedural requirement under Italian law before certain precautionary detention measures may be approved. The arrest at the Naples cruise terminal prevented him from boarding the vessel, although investigators have not disclosed the name of the cruise ship or its intended itinerary. Cruise schedules indicate that MSC Cruises' MSC World Europa and Princess Cruises' Enchanted Princess were in Naples on August 3rd.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the allegations against Rizzo have not been tested in court. Under Italian law, he is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty through judicial proceedings.
