Celebrity River Cruises has marked the float-out of Celebrity Compass, the first boat in its fleet, scheduled for a European debut in September 2027.
The milestone marks the transition from hull assembly to outfitting and completion as Celebrity prepares to establish a presence in the European river cruise market. The company has outlined plans for a 20-ship river fleet by 2031, representing a significant expansion beyond its established ocean operations.
The first steel for Celebrity Compass was cut at the beginning of 2026. At the same time, Celebrity announced a commitment for 10 additional riverboats, bringing the planned fleet to 20 units.
The river ships are being developed with design and guest-experience elements influenced by Celebrity’s EDGE-class vessels.
During a recent earnings call, Royal Caribbean Group Chairman and CEO Jason Liberty described the concept as an adaptation of the EDGE design for the smaller dimensions and operating requirements of European rivers.
Celebrity Compass will introduce this approach when it enters service on September 9th, 2027. The vessel is intended to bring elements of Celebrity’s existing ocean cruise product into a river cruise setting while accommodating the different operational characteristics of European waterways.
The river programme is also part of Royal Caribbean Group’s broader strategy to offer guests different cruise experiences within its portfolio. Liberty said the company had significant ambitions for the river business and viewed it as an opportunity to retain existing Celebrity guests who are interested in European river itineraries.
Following the float-out, Celebrity Compass will undergo further outfitting and completion work ahead of its scheduled entry into service in 2027.
