The Sydney-based unit in Carnival Corporation & plc group, P&O Cruises Australia, plans to replace its existing fleet of 5 cruise ships, all of which built during the 1990s to other cruise brands, with more contemporary tonnage over time.

The company will receive the built in 2001 Golden Princess from sister cruise company Princess in 2020, which is a year later than it had been envisaged to obtain a 135,000 GT newbuild from Fincantieri.

It would have been the first newbuilding of the line, but Carnival group decided to allocate the vessel to Carnival Cruise Line instead.
