Iago Negueruela, Balearic Islands' Minister of Tourism, and Jose Hila, Mayor of Palma City, have been holding talks with the major cruise lines to discuss ways to limit the number of cruise ships visiting Port Palma de Mallorca.

The two politicians met with some of the major cruiseship operators in Hamburg germany. The Balearic government made the issue a priority following a wave of protests claiming that the port city Palma (on Mallorca Island) was overcrowded with a large number of cruise tourists.

However, a recent poll said that 70% of shop takings in Palma were to tourists, many of whom had come by cruise ship.

The minister for tourism said they would like to see a reduction in the so-called mega-liners which are visiting the port at the moment with 5,000 cruise passengers onboard.
