Getting from the Cruise Port

Arrival arrangements vary by ship. Some vessels berth at the working commercial port, while others anchor in the bay and tender passengers ashore. Confirm the day’s gangway or tender location aboard your ship.

From the port area, the central streets are roughly 1.5 km (0.9 mi) away, normally around 15–25 minutes on foot. Conditions may include heat, uneven surfaces, traffic and limited shade. Taxis and tuk-tuks are commonly used for short trips and private tours; agree on the total fare, route and return time before leaving.

Do not rely on finding suitable transport at the last minute for distant attractions. Mobile coverage, card acceptance and vehicle standards can vary, so carry small-denomination Malagasy ariary and arrange important journeys in advance.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Explore Central Antsiranana

Allow about 2–3 hours for Rue Colbert, the covered market, Place Joffre, local shops and the surrounding streets. The main interest is the city’s everyday atmosphere and its weathered colonial-era architecture rather than a collection of major monuments.

This is the simplest independent option. Wear comfortable shoes, protect yourself from the sun and ask permission before photographing people or market stalls.

Visit Montagne d’Ambre National Park

The rainforest park lies about 30–38 km (18.6–23.6 mi) from Antsiranana, beyond Joffreville. A visit normally occupies most of the port call once road travel and a guided forest walk are included.

Trails can lead through humid forest to waterfalls and wildlife habitat associated with lemurs, chameleons and endemic birds. Sightings are never guaranteed. Closed shoes, insect repellent and rain protection are useful.

Organized excursion recommended. Transport should be arranged in advance, and a local guide is valuable for route finding and wildlife spotting.

Tour the Three Bays and Ramena

Ramena is approximately 20 km (12.4 mi) from the city and has a long sandy beach beside a fishing village. Coastal tours may continue to Sakalava Bay, Dunes Bay, Pigeon Bay, Orangea and old military remains, depending on road and weather conditions.

Allow at least half a day, and preferably most of the call for a broader Three Bays circuit. Some sections may involve rough roads or walking over sand and exposed terrain. Swimming conditions can vary with wind, currents and season.

Independent with pre-arranged transport. A driver or guided tour is preferable to negotiating separate journeys during the day.

Hike Montagne des Français

The trail area begins roughly 12 km (7.5 mi) from Antsiranana. The climb includes steep sections and numerous steps, leading toward viewpoints over the bay and remnants of military fortifications.

Allow around 4–5 hours including transport and the hike. This option suits active visitors with proper footwear and enough time ashore. Take water and avoid beginning the climb without confirming local access and return transport.

Self-Guided City Walk

Port to Market and Colonial Streets

Route: port exit or tender landing → central waterfront streets → Place Joffre → Rue Colbert → covered market → surrounding commercial streets → return to the port.

• Distance: approximately 3–4 km (1.9–2.5 mi), depending on the exact passenger exit.
• Pure walking time: about 50–70 minutes.
• Recommended total time: 2–3 hours with market and refreshment stops.
• Difficulty: easy to moderate; generally urban walking, but expect heat, uneven pavements and busy traffic.

Retrace your route or take a pre-agreed tuk-tuk back to the port. If the ship is tendering, return well before the published final tender rather than planning around departure time.

Longer Excursions

The Red Tsingy, Ankarana and other distant natural sites involve substantial road travel. They are appropriate only for a sufficiently long call with reliable transport and an itinerary designed specifically around the ship’s schedule. A cruise-line or established local excursion is the safer choice.

Boat trips toward the Emerald Sea are also weather-dependent and may consume most of the day. Confirm the departure point, boat type, safety equipment and guaranteed return arrangements before booking.

• Antsiranana can be hot, humid and windy; carry water, sun protection and a light rain layer.
• Use closed shoes for forest walks and footwear suitable for uneven city streets.
• Cash is more dependable than cards for markets, tuk-tuks and small purchases.
• Agree on taxi or tuk-tuk fares before departure and pay after the agreed journey when practical.
