Brunswick GA (port locode USSSI) is a port city in southeastern Georgia (USA) with population around 16,000 (metro over 110,000), ranking it as Georgia's 2nd largest (after Savannah).
Brunswick Harbor is on the Atlantic Ocean, approx 60 km (40 mi) north of Florida, and approx 130 km (80 ml) south of South Carolina.
The first settlement was established by British colonists in 1738. Its city status was granted in 1856. Before WW2 (1939-1945), Brunswick was an important port and a strategic military base with a shipbuilding facility run by JA Jones Construction Company.
City's largest private employers are Southeast Georgia Health System, King & Prince Seafood (Gorton's of Gloucester, subsidiary of Nippon Suisan Kaisha), eBay Enterprise, Pinova (specialty rosins, polyterpene resins), Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation (business jet aircraft manufacturer, subsidiary of General Dynamics), and Georgia-Pacific mill (wood pulp is producer).
Tourism is the city's largest industry. Brunswick and the Golden Isles are popular among both domestic and international tourists as resort vacation destination and visited the whole year-round. The region is famous for its beaches, resorts, restaurants and shops, historic sites. The city is served by Brunswick Golden Isles Airport with daily roundtrip flights to Atlanta GA (Hartsfield–Jackson Airport). Through the city pass 3 federal highways (routes 17, 25 and 341).
Port Brunswick
City's current economy is largely based on seaport activities, logistics and tourism. By handled annual traffic (10% of USA's Ro-Ro shipping trade), Port Brunswick is ranked USA's 3rd largest - after Los Angeles and NYC (Newark NJ).
Port Brunswick is one of the most productive on the US East Coast and ranked USA's 6th-busiest by automobile shipping volume. From here are exported most of the US-made car brands (Ford and GM), as well as for Mercedes-Benz. Among the imported car brands are Hyundai, Kia, Mitsubishi, Porsche, Volvo, Jaguar, Land Rover, Audi, VW, BMW. Other exports include agricultural products and various bulk cargoes.
The port is managed by Georgia Ports Authority (GPA) and has 4 main cargo terminals - Colonel's Island (RoRo terminal and Agri-bulk terminal), Mayor's Point (within the city) and Marine Port (southwest of the city). By GPA’s USD 1,7 billion Colonel’s Island Terminal project, the facility will be expanded to 666 acres (2,7 km2).
For FY2019 (fiscal year, ending June 30) Port Brunswick reported annual volumes of 613,680 cars and machinery units (at Colonel’s Island Terminal), which is GPA’s main Ro-Ro port for import-export vehicles (cars, trucks, tractors). Terminal's cargo volumes grew by 4% (over FY2018). East River Terminal (operated by Logistec) reported ~1,2 million tons of bulk cargoes (20% / 203,000 tons increase) largely due to an increase in shipping of wood and peanut pellets and perlite (amorphous volcanic glass).
Brunswick offers two practical ways to spend a cruise call: explore its compact historic downtown or arrange a trip to nearby St. Simons or Jekyll Island. Downtown is the simplest choice for a short visit; the islands offer beaches, coastal scenery and additional attractions but require road transport.
Independent sightseeing: Easy independently if your ship docks at the downtown waterfront. Independent island visits require some planning and a confirmed return transfer.
Getting from the Ship to the Sights
Small cruise ships have used the downtown waterfront at Mary Ross Waterfront Park, beside Bay and Gloucester Streets. From this area, Newcastle Street’s shops and restaurants are only a few blocks away. Confirm your ship’s actual berth and passenger exit before setting out; Brunswick’s commercial cargo terminals are separate from the downtown sightseeing area.
For St. Simons or Jekyll Island, arrange a taxi, private driver or ship excursion. Allow roughly 20–35 minutes each way from downtown to the main visitor areas, depending on the destination and traffic. More distant island stops take longer. Confirm pickup arrangements rather than relying on finding a vehicle when you are ready to return.
Best Ways to Spend Your Time
Historic Downtown and the Waterfront
Allow 1.5–3 hours for waterfront views, Newcastle Street’s independent shops, the exterior of the Ritz Theatre and Old City Hall, and a pause in Hanover Square. Add a seafood lunch if time permits. The central streets are mostly flat, making this the easiest independent option from a downtown berth.
St. Simons Island: Pier Village and Lighthouse
Allow about 3–4 hours including transfers for the island’s southern visitor area. Browse Pier Village, walk to the fishing pier and waterfront park, and visit the St. Simons Lighthouse Museum. Climbing the lighthouse involves 129 steps; visitors who prefer to avoid the climb can concentrate on the waterfront and museum exhibits.
A prearranged driver makes this manageable independently. East Beach is a separate stop requiring additional transport, so choose between a relaxed village visit and a beach-focused outing if your call is short.
Jekyll Island: Historic District and Sea Turtles
Allow approximately 4–5 hours including transfers to explore the historic district around the Jekyll Island Club and visit the Georgia Sea Turtle Center. The center combines exhibits with opportunities to observe turtle rehabilitation. Historic trolley tours are another option, subject to departure times and availability.
The historic district is suitable for walking once you arrive, but it is not a walking destination from the ship. A driver or organized excursion is preferable if you want to combine several island stops.
Driftwood Beach and Coastal Scenery
On northern Jekyll Island, Driftwood Beach is best approached as a photography and nature stop, with weathered trees scattered along the shoreline. Allow 45–90 minutes at the beach, plus road transfers. Lower tide generally provides more room to explore; sand, exposed roots and fallen timber make footing uneven.
For a conventional beach break, consider Great Dunes Beach on Jekyll Island or East Beach on St. Simons. Brunswick’s downtown waterfront has no swimming beach. Arrange a return pickup and check local beach conditions before entering the water.
Self-Guided Walking Tour
Easy: Downtown Waterfront and Historic Squares
Start and finish: Mary Ross Waterfront Park, if accessible from your berth. Distance: Approximately 2.5 km (1.6 mi). Walking time: About 35–45 minutes. Total time: Allow 1.5–2.5 hours with sightseeing and refreshment stops.
- Mary Ross Waterfront Park: Begin with views of the working waterfront and the Liberty Ship Memorial Plaza.
- Gloucester Street: Walk inland toward the downtown shopping streets, using designated crossings across Bay Street.
- Ritz Theatre: Turn north onto Newcastle Street to see the historic theatre exterior.
- Newcastle Street: Retrace your steps south through the main shopping and restaurant area.
- Old City Hall: Continue to the distinctive clock-towered building for an exterior stop.
- Hanover Square: Explore the nearby shaded square before returning north toward Gloucester Street and the waterfront.
The route is mostly flat, with street crossings and occasional uneven pavement. Interior access to historic buildings depends on opening arrangements; the route works as an exterior walk. Return to your confirmed passenger entrance rather than assuming every waterfront access point leads to the ship.
Planning Your Return
- Choose one island for a relaxed call. Visiting both adds driving and reduces time at the attractions.
- For an independent island outing, aim to reach the berth at least an hour before all-aboard, with extra allowance during busy periods or unsettled weather.
- Check attraction hours and tour departures before leaving the ship, particularly for Sunday visits.
- Bring water, sun protection and comfortable shoes. Coastal heat and humidity can make even flat walks tiring.
- For boat trips or guided marsh activities, verify the departure location, duration and return time before booking.
