Covenas is a Caribbean port (at Morrosquillo Gulf), beach resort town and municipality (since 2002) in Colombia's Sucre Department, with population around 17,000. Columbia's principal port (and the country's largest by annual shipping volumes) is Buenaventura.

The settlement (as Hacienda Santa Barbara de Cobena) was founded (as a slave trade port) in the mid-16th century and developed (as a cattle meat and oil export port) in the early-20th century. The tourism industry started to develop in the 1960s (targeting mainly domestic tourists) and largely since the 1980s (with more advanced infrastructure and modern amenities targeting foreign vacationers).

From Puerto Covenas (locode COCVE), cruise ship tourists are offered bus travel tours to San Antero (Cordoba Department), approx 11 km (7 mi) to the west-southwest. Further from San Antero on bus excursions can be visited Tuchin (indigenous village/Zenu culture). From Cavenas is also accessed the heritage town Santa Cruz de Lorica.

Also in close proximity to Covenas is the artificial island Santa Cruz del Islote (part of San Bernardo Archipelago) - famous for being one of the world's most densely populated islands (population around 1300, land area 1,3 hectares/3,2 acres).

Covenas Airport is a military airport that also serves charter flights (by SARPA/Servicios Aereos Panamericanos/charter airline with air ambulance services, based at Bogota's Eldorado Airport). The seasonal charter flights link with Medellin City (Olaya Herrera Airport) from can be accessed domestic and international airport destinations. The upgraded Sincelejo-Cartagena road links Covenas with Medellin (bus travel time ~6 hours), Cartagena (~2 hours), Monteria (Cordoba Department's capital city/~1,5 hours), Lorica Cordoba (municipality's shopping center/~0,5 hours).

Since 1974, Port Covenas handles mainly oil tankers serving Ecopetrol (fka Colombian Petroleum Company). Also since 1974 here is headquartered the Colombian Navy (at the ARC Covenas Naval Base/infantry battalion and training base/school).

Planning Your Time Ashore

Organized excursion recommended. Coveñas is a gateway to beaches, mangrove waterways and the cultural towns of Córdoba. A beach visit can work independently with confirmed transport, but guided trips are more practical for nature activities and visits to Lorica or Tuchín.

Choose one main outing. A local beach or mangrove trip suits a shorter call; a combined cultural excursion needs more time and coordinated transport.

Getting Ashore and Around

Confirm your ship’s actual landing point before arranging an independent outing. Calls listed as Coveñas can involve the wider San Antero area, and the mapped commercial port should not be treated as a walk-off passenger terminal. Docking or small-boat landing arrangements, vehicle access and the return meeting point need to be checked with the ship.

For independent sightseeing, arrange a driver who can collect you at the confirmed passenger landing and provide the return journey. Do not rely on finding a cruise shuttle or a waiting taxi. Beaches and excursion departure points are spread along the coast, so walking from the landing is not a dependable plan.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Beach Time at Primera or Segunda Ensenada

Independent with some planning or transport. These are the main beach areas of Coveñas, suitable for a relaxed swim, a short shoreline walk and lunch. Allow around 2–3 hours at the beach, plus your confirmed transfers.

Select a specific beach restaurant or venue as your drop-off and collection point. Check access, shade, toilets and any charges before settling in. Walking is mostly flat, but soft sand and strong sun can make it tiring. Assess swimming conditions locally and stay clear of boat activity.

Ciénaga de La Caimanera Mangrove Trip

Guided activity recommended. Local guides take visitors by canoe through a coastal lagoon and narrow mangrove channels. This is a good alternative to a beach day, with opportunities to see waterbirds and learn about the wetland.

Boat outings commonly take approximately 1.5–3 hours; add road transfers and boarding time. Confirm the route and duration when booking rather than assuming every trip includes the same stops. Wildlife sightings are not guaranteed.

There is little walking, but boarding a small canoe requires balance and mobility. Ask about assistance if needed, wear the supplied life jacket and bring insect repellent, water and sun protection.

Lorica’s Historic Center

Independent with a prearranged driver; organized excursion preferable for a short call. Lorica offers a compact sightseeing area around the Sinú River, with the historic public market, Parque Bolívar, Santa Cruz church and distinctive buildings influenced by the town’s trading connections.

Allow approximately 2 hours in the center. The road journey from Coveñas is roughly 45–60 minutes each way, depending on the actual landing point and traffic. Plan around half a day overall, with additional return margin.

Tuchín and Zenú Weaving Traditions

Organized excursion recommended. Tuchín is associated with caña flecha weaving and the sombrero vueltiao. An arranged community or workshop visit is more useful than arriving independently without a confirmed host.

This is a longer inland outing, sometimes combined with Lorica. Choose it when the ship offers a coordinated itinerary or a reputable operator confirms that the transfers and visit fit your call. Do not add it casually to a beach or mangrove plan.

Self-Guided Walk in Lorica

Easy Historic Center and Riverfront Route

Start at a driver drop-off near Parque Bolívar. This walk is an option after a road transfer, not a route from the ship.

  1. Parque Bolívar: orient yourself in the central square.
  2. Santa Cruz church: view the exterior; enter only if open and services permit.
  3. Historic buildings around the square: look at the architectural details.
  4. Mercado Público, also called El Ranchón: explore the historic market beside the river.
  5. Sinú riverfront: take a short waterfront stroll before returning to the agreed collection point.

Allow approximately 1–1.5 km (0.6–0.9 mi), 20–30 minutes of pure walking and 1.5–2 hours with stops. The route is mostly flat, with uneven paving and limited shade in places. Keep the walk compact in midday heat and agree the collection time with your driver before starting.

Trips That Need More Caution

San Bernardo island trips, including Múcura, Tintipán and Santa Cruz del Islote, involve additional boat travel and weather-dependent returns. Regular tourist departures may not match the ship’s schedule. Consider them only with an operator who confirms the complete itinerary against your call; a coordinated ship excursion is preferable when offered.

Practical Tips

  • Confirm whether independent passengers can leave the landing area and how they return before booking transport.
  • Carry Colombian pesos for small purchases and agree transport costs beforehand.
  • Bring water, a hat and sunscreen; add insect repellent for mangrove visits.
  • For independent road outings, aim to reach the return meeting point at least an hour before the ship’s stated deadline. Allow extra time for longer transfers or small-boat embarkation.
  • Follow the ship’s announced all-aboard or final boat time, which may be earlier than departure.
