Davenport IA is a Mississippi River cruise port and city in the USA's Iowa State (Quad Cities Metro Area / Northwest Illinois and Southeast Iowa). The region consists of 4 counties - Iowa's Davenport and Bettendorf, and Illinois' Moline and Rock Island. Quad Cities' metropolis has population around 400,000 and total area approx 170 mi2 (400 km2).

Davenport has population around 105,000 (metro around 185,000). The city is located halfway between Chicago (175 mi / 280 km to the east via HIghway I-88E) and Des Moines (167 mi / 270 km to the west via Highway I-80W). The city is also on the Iowa-Illinois state border (crossing over the Centennial Bridge) and prone to seasonal flooding. Davenport is popular with its annual music festivals and large sports events, the largest of which are the Mississippi Valley Blues- and Fair festivals, the Bix Fest (Beiderbecke Jazz Festival), River Roots Live, Beaux Arts Fair, Bix 7 (road race). The city is a great destination for biking, having 20+ mi (30+ km) of recreational paths.

The city's economy is heavily based on manufacturing, with Davenport Works (plant of John Deere/machinery manufacturer) being the city's largest and Quad Cities' second-largest employer (after Rock Island Arsenal / on Arsenal Island/Rock Island Illinois). Other well-developed industries are healthcare and tourism.

In 2021, the city repaired the seawall and started works to extend the riverwalk and the esplanade that runs the River Heritage Park's entire waterfront length. The extended promenade now features a decorative walkway, benches, new lighting.

For 2022 were scheduled visits by large boats operated by 3 cruise companies (ACL-American Cruise Lines, AQSC/AQV-American Queen Voyages and Viking), in some days anchoring simultaneously along the seawall.

Easy independently: Davenport’s downtown sights are within walking distance of the usual riverboat landing. A waterfront stroll, the Figge Art Museum and a downtown meal make a practical short visit. Attractions elsewhere in the Quad Cities require transport.

Getting from the Riverboat Landing

River cruise ships normally dock alongside the waterfront at River Heritage Park on East River Drive, rather than using tenders. Confirm your ship’s exact gangway location and pedestrian exit before setting out.

From the park, central downtown is roughly 15–20 minutes away on foot. The Figge Art Museum is approximately 1 km (0.6 mi) away, depending on the landing position and available pedestrian route. The waterfront and lower downtown are mostly flat; streets become steeper farther inland.

Riverfront construction, including the Main Street Landing project, can interrupt the promenade and nearby crossings. Follow posted pedestrian diversions and use designated crossings over River Drive and the railway. The Skybridge provides a connection between the waterfront and downtown when accessible.

No transfer is normally needed for central sightseeing. For outlying attractions, arrange a taxi or rideshare and plan the return journey before leaving. Public buses serve the area, but connections between the Quad Cities can consume a substantial part of a short call.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Downtown and the Mississippi Waterfront

Allow 1.5–3 hours for river views, LeClaire Park, the Skybridge and downtown cafés or shops. Continue west toward the Freight House and Modern Woodmen Park if time permits. The baseball stadium is a useful exterior photo stop; entry depends on events and opening arrangements.

This is the simplest independent option. Keep the walk flexible around riverfront closures, and use downtown sidewalks where the riverside trail is unavailable.

Figge Art Museum

Allow 1–2 hours inside the museum, plus the walk from the ship. Its art collections and changing exhibitions make it a useful choice in rain or summer heat. Combine it with the Skybridge and a short downtown walk rather than trying to fit in several museums.

The museum normally closes on Mondays and opens later on Sundays. Check the day’s opening arrangements before making it the main activity.

Freight House Farmers’ Market

On a Saturday or Sunday call, allow 45–90 minutes for local produce, food stalls and browsing at the Freight House on West River Drive. It fits naturally into a waterfront walk, approximately 20–30 minutes from River Heritage Park.

The market is a weekend activity, not a guaranteed daily attraction. Check that its trading hours overlap your time ashore.

Putnam Museum and Science Center

For families or visitors interested in science, natural history and regional collections, allow 2–3 hours including local transport. The Putnam is inland at West 12th and Division Streets; use a taxi, rideshare or an organized excursion rather than spending much of the call walking there.

Arrange the return pickup in advance. Add a giant-screen film only if its schedule leaves enough time for the museum and your return.

John Deere Pavilion in Moline

The John Deere Pavilion offers machinery displays and interactive exhibits across the river in downtown Moline, Illinois. This is a separate outing from downtown Davenport. Allow approximately 3 hours overall, with around 20–30 minutes each way by car as a planning allowance, depending on traffic and the bridge route.

Independent sightseeing is practical with reliable return transport. An organized excursion is convenient for anyone wanting a broader Quad Cities tour. Check opening hours before travelling and avoid combining this outing with another distant attraction on a short call.

Self-Guided Walking Route

River Heritage Park, Downtown and LeClaire Park

Distance: approximately 3 km (1.9 mi) return, depending on diversions. Pure walking time: 45–60 minutes. Recommended time: 2–3 hours, or longer with a museum visit. Difficulty: easy on mostly flat paved paths and sidewalks, with a level change at the Skybridge.

  1. River Heritage Park: start at the ship’s confirmed pedestrian exit and take in the Mississippi views.
  2. Skybridge: head west using the open waterfront route or signed downtown diversion. Use the bridge for river views and access toward Second Street when available.
  3. Second Street: take a short stroll past downtown buildings, cafés and shops.
  4. Figge Art Museum: visit the galleries if open, or keep this as an exterior stop.
  5. Freight House: continue west to the market building; browse the stalls if your call coincides with trading hours.
  6. LeClaire Park: return toward the river for the bandshell and waterfront views, then retrace an open, designated pedestrian route east to River Heritage Park.

If construction interrupts the riverfront, stay on downtown sidewalks and cross only at designated locations. Shorten the route after the Figge if walking conditions or available time make the western section impractical.

Practical Tips

  • Check access that morning: high river levels and construction can change the landing arrangements and close waterfront paths.
  • Allow for the weather: exposed riverside sections can be hot, windy or wet. Carry water and wear comfortable walking shoes.
  • Use the riverfront for walking: it is not a beach stop; do not plan to swim beside the landing.
  • Keep a return margin: aim to reach the landing at least 30 minutes before the ship’s stated all-aboard time. Leave additional contingency for vehicle trips and bridge traffic.
