Matarani is a major port city located in Peru's Arequipa Region, on country's south-western coast. Port Matarani is managed by the company Tisur (Terminal Internacional del Sur SA), which is subsidiary of Romero Group.
Port Matarani is the gateway to the colonial city Arequipa, located approx 120 km (75 ml) inland. From Arequipa, at approx 320 km (200 ml) is Lake Titicaca and approx 650 km (400 ml) to Machu Picchu and Cusco.
Port Matarani is among Peru's three seaports (together with Ilo and San Juan de Marcona) which are the terminus of the Interoceanic Highway (aka SIC / Southern Interoceanic Corridor). This is a transcontinental, 2600-km long and east-west running highway that connects Peru with Brazil, thus linking by road the Atlantic and Pacific oceans.
The highway has a total of 22 bridges and gives Brazil direct access to the Pacific Ocean, without the need to pay the restrictions, costs and distance of Panama Canal. It will also gave Peru direct access to Atlantic Ocean via several Brazilian seaports allowing easier and faster access to the shipping markets of Europe and the Atlantic American ports. The SIC highway also allows Peru to access the Atlantic Ocean through Amazon River - via Peru's ports Pucallpa, Iquitos and Yurimaguas.
