Nyborg is a port town on Denmark's Funen Island (Nyborg Municipality) with population around 18,000. Funen is sized approx 3100 km2 (1197 mi2) with Odense being its largest city/principal port followed by (ranked by population) Svendborg, Nyborg, Middelfart, Faaborg, Assens, Kerteminde, Ringe, Otterup, and Bogense.

The road distance between Nyborg and Odense is approx 30 km/19 mi (to the northwest via highway E20), Svendborg is approx 35 km/22 mi (to the south via Route 163), Middelfart is approx 75 km/47 mi (to the west via highway E20), Faaborg is approx 59 km/37 mi (to the west-south via highway E20 and Route 43), Assens is approx 65 km/40 mi (to the west via highway E20 and Route 168), and Kerteminde is approx 21 km/13 mi (to the north via Route 165).

Nyborg Harbour Port's locode is DKNBG.

The settlement (as Nyborg Slot) was founded in the late-12th-century and developed around an existing fortification (square-shaped moated castle with a defensive wall connecting its towers). The 1913-restored Nyborg Castle (in downtown) now houses the Nyborg Museum. The Castle is surrounded by fortifications, a lake, and a moat.

Nyborg became Kobstad (market town) in the mid-13th-century - the status was granted by King Valdemar II Valdemarsen/The Victorious (1170-1241). In the mid-15th-century Nyborg received more trade privileges, including outlawing its harbor and permission for hosting an annual market. For a short period in the 16th century (1525-59) Nyborg was declared by King Frederick I (1471-1533) as the king's residency and acted as Denmark's capital. His successor - King Christian III (1503-59) expanded the Castle and the city. The city was ransacked and almost destroyed (its Castle was ruined) in the mid-17th-century, during the Dano-Swedish War (1658-60) after the Battle of Nyborg by the Dutch naval fleet and Swedish troops.

Among the city's oldest buildings is also Vor Frue Kirke (15th-century church with two organs).
