Pulau Buton (aka Butung, Boeton, Button) is a large island located off southeast Sulawesi (Celebes Island, Indonesia). By land area (approx 11600 km2 / 4410 mi2) it is ranked the world's 129th and Indonesia's 19th largest island. Its population is around 450,000. With the same name there is a smaller island (part of Riau Islands) located west of Pulau Bintan.
Buton's largest town is Bau-Bau. Largely covered by rainforest, the island is popular among tourists for its abundant wildlife. This is also one of only two habitats (the other being Sulawesi Island) of the anoa buffalo. Pulau Buton has huge reserves of natural asphalt and other minerals.
