Mangalore was an important shipbuilding centre during Hyder Ali's rule. This hillside city with a twisting maze of streets offers cruisers unrivaled view of southern India. Located in Karnataka region, Mangalore is strategically situated between Western Ghats and the shores of Arabian Sea. During 14th and 15th centuries, the city was sought by plenty of outside powers including the British Dutch and princes of Nayaka. Currenntly the port exports 75% of nation's coffee, cashew nuts and spices. Visitors to Mangalore are able to learn about the ancient caste system of India, which is still intact. Many intricately decorated churches and temples number among city's attractions, such as Kadri Manjuntha Temple with Lokeshwara bronze and Saint Aloysius College chapel.

The port of Mangalore is palm-fringed and contains the remnants of the naval fort of Tippu Sultan. It is mentioned in the 14th century by Arabian traders as one of the major forts in India and then the site of Portuguese base. Mangalore became key entrepot for Mysore rulers in 17th and 18th centuries. Gurpur and Nethravathi rivers offer boat trips into the countryside.
