Saint-Raphael is a commune in the department of Var, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, southeastern France. Right to the west of Saint-Raphael lies an older town named Frejus, and together they form the urban agglomeration Frejus Saint-Raphaël. Var lies in an area called Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, abbreviated to PACA.
During the second half of the 19th century the township came under influence of writer Alphonse Karr and mayor Felix Martin, and owing to their efforts and the beneficial climate of the commune, it developed into a seaside resort much popular with artists, politicians and sportsmen.
