Taha’a (also spelled as "Tahaa") is an island situated among the western group, Leeward Islands, of Society Islands in French Polynesia, overseas territory of France in the Pacific. The islands of Tahaa and neighboring Raiatea to the south are now enclosed by the same coral reef, and may once have been a single isle.
Tahaa has 5,000 inhabitants living on 90 km2 (35 ml2), and reaches a maximum height of 590 m (1,940 ft). It is also famous as the "Vanilla Island" (Tahaa produces up to 80% of French Polynesia's vanilla) and for the producing of pearls of exceptional quality.
Administratively, Tahaa and the surrounding islets that emerge from the coral reef form a municipality (commune) part of the administrative subdivision of Leeward Islands. The administrative centre of the municipality of Tahaa is the settlement of Patio.
Tahaa and its tiny islets can be reached by boat from Raiatea Island. The short sail takes visitors to an islet beach with a pretty lagoon, and in close distance, a splendid Bora Bora view. These Society Islands' parts are less modernized.
