MS Nordlys (1994-built, last refurbished in February 2019) is one of the six ships advertised as “contemporary” Hurtigruten vessels, together with Kong Harald, Nordkapp, Nordnorge, Polarlys, and Richard With. These vessels serve the company’s Norwegian Coastal Voyages (NCV) program, offering cruiseferry travel on passenger-cargo ships operating regular year-round coastal crossings along Norway, calling at 34 seaports between Bergen and Kirkenes.
The MS Nordlys deck plan shows a total of 223 staterooms accommodating 469 passengers (maximum capacity 590 guests on Norwegian Coastal Voyages), served by 70 crew (all Norwegian). She has 7 decks (6 accessible to passengers, 4 with cabins, all connected by 2 elevators), 1 car lift (between decks 2 and 3), 4 bars, 5 lounges, a Spa/Sauna, and a Fitness Center. Her interior design is inspired by the Northern Lights, with public spaces displaying artworks created by Norwegian artists from the coastal regions. The ship has four cabin decks, featuring mostly twin-bed outside staterooms with large picture windows.
The name “Nordlys” translates from Norwegian as “Northern Lights,” referring to Europe’s Aurora Borealis phenomenon.
