MSC Cruises has officially confirmed the order of two liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered vessels in collaboration with Chantiers de l’Atlantique/STX France in St Nazaire.

The orders for both WORLD Class vessels, currently designated as World Class 3 (IMO 9901556) and World Class 4 (IMO 9901568) include an option for a 5th unit. The newbuilds are scheduled for deliveries in 2026 (May) and 2027 (February).

Already recognized as the most energy-efficient ships in the industry, MSC World Europa and MSC World America have consistently outperformed the International Maritime Organization (IMO) Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) requirements. The newly ordered vessels will build upon the advanced WORLD Class prototype, incorporating innovative solutions to further enhance energy efficiency. These solutions will leverage extensive heat recovery and other technological advancements, resulting in a significantly reduced carbon footprint.

Moreover, the vessels will be equipped to utilize various alternative fuels, including bio and synthetic methane, as well as green methanol.

The dual-fuel internal combustion engines with reduced methane slip will be a prominent feature of the new WORLD Class vessels. Additionally, the ships will incorporate shore power plug-in connectivity to minimize carbon emissions while in port. They will also integrate advanced wastewater treatment systems aligned with IMO standards, introduce innovations in waste management, and adopt a comprehensive suite of onboard energy-efficient equipment to optimize engine use and hotel energy needs, ultimately contributing to further emission reductions.

It is worth noting that the realization of these two new orders is contingent upon securing financing, following industry norms.
