Italy's Port Genoa to boast new shoreside power facilities

On October 30th, started construction works in Port Genoa for installing new shoreside power facilities. These enhancements aim to allow passenger vessels, while docked at the passenger terminals, to cease their diesel generators and connect to the city's electrical power grid, resulting in an immediate and substantial reduction in carbon emissions and noise pollution.

The onshore power initiative aligns with a comprehensive strategy adopted by the Western Ligurian Sea Port Authority. The goal is to expedite the transformation of the Ports of Genoa and Savona-Vado Ligure toward the adoption of clean energy solutions, especially considering the strategic location of Ligurian maritime hubs within city centers.

Currently, preliminary site preparations are underway to facilitate future construction activities and the detection and clearance of unexploded ordnances by a team of experts. The project's initial phase involves the installation of a new power generation unit with a capacity of 20 MWh, catering to up to three cruise ships simultaneously. Subsequently, the second phase aims to increase the energy supply to 42 MWh, servicing adjacent ferry terminals.

A shoreside power supply is already operational in Port Genoa's Shipyard Refitting Area (Fincantieri) and at the PSA Genova Pra’s container terminal.

With the completion of construction at the passenger (cruise and ferry) hub scheduled for 2025, the city aspires to emerge as a leading sustainable seaport, striving to achieve its primary objective of becoming carbon-neutral.
