On November 22, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the keynote address at the grand inauguration of the Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal in Durban. This significant milestone is the outcome of a collaborative venture between MSC Cruises and the Africa Armada Consortium.

The genesis of this project dates back to 2019 when MSC Cruises engaged in a Public Private Partnership with Transnet, with the shared objective of conceptualizing, constructing, and operating a state-of-the-art cruise terminal at the port of Durban. The result is the Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal, a contemporary marvel that seamlessly integrates cutting-edge technology and a commitment to hospitality, promising an unparalleled experience for its guests.

Throughout the terminal's design, construction, and operation, a steadfast emphasis has been placed on bolstering the local economy. An impressive 70% of procurement activities related to the terminal were locally sourced within South Africa. Notably, the terminal prides itself on an all-South African team, encompassing architects, engineers, legal professionals, and the construction workforce, showcasing the rich talent and expertise indigenous to the nation.

The Nelson Mandela Cruise Terminal not only positions Durban as a premier global destination for cruise ships but also stands as a testament to MSC Cruises' unwavering dedication to the KwaZulu Natal Region and South Africa at large. The inauguration ceremony is anticipated to be a momentous occasion, graced by the presence of government and private sector partners, key figures in the tourism industry, distinguished media representatives, and top executives from MSC Cruises.

The substantial initial investment of US$15.8 million underscores the magnitude of the project. Furthermore, as a clear demonstration of confidence in the region's cruising potential, an additional R1.6 million has been injected in 2023 to facilitate further expansion.
