The second China-built large cruise ship Adora Flora City reached a significant construction milestone on April 28, 2025, with the commencement of the vessel’s launch/floating operation at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).

According to CSSC, water was introduced into the ship’s dry dock early Monday morning, April 28, successfully floating the vessel. A floating ceremony was subsequently held to mark the occasion. In shipbuilding practice, the floating stage is critical as it enables thorough inspection and testing of the ship’s hull and integrated systems before the outfitting phase and mooring trials commence.

Adora Flora City is the second large cruise ship constructed as part of China's strategic initiative to domestically design and build cruise vessels—widely regarded as one of the most technically challenging categories of civilian ships. Construction began in August 2022 at Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding, with delivery scheduled for the end of 2026.

Compared to China’s first cruise ship Adora Magic City, Adora Flora City incorporates several enhancements. The vessel will displace approximately 141,900 metric tons and measure 341 meters in length—an increase of 17.4 meters over its predecessor. Guest accommodations have been expanded, with 19 additional staterooms bringing the total to 2,130, allowing a maximum passenger capacity of 5,232. Public areas have also been enlarged to improve onboard amenities.

Technical innovations in shipbuilding methods have accelerated the construction process of Adora Flora City compared to that of Adora Magic City, according to project engineers.

Upon delivery, Adora Flora City will be homeported in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province.

Adora Magic City began construction in October 2019 at the same shipyard, was completed in July 2023, and underwent sea trials before entering service in November 2023. Since her maiden voyage in January 2024, Adora Magic City has completed over 100 voyages, serving more than 350,000 passengers.
