National Geographic–Lindblad Expeditions has arranged a 3-year charter of the expedition cruise ship Greg Mortimer to support expansion of its Alaska programme beginning in 2027, enhancing capacity and itinerary options as the company prepares to retire its long-serving small ships National Geographic Sea Bird and National Geographic Sea Lion after the 2026 season. The charter is intended to address strong and growing demand for expedition voyages in Alaska, allowing the line to explore additional routes and extend its presence in the region’s remote wilderness areas.
The Greg Mortimer, built in 2019 and designed for operation in challenging, remote environments, is equipped with features that support expedition cruising, such as an Ulstein X-BOW® hull for improved stability and comfort, dynamic positioning to minimise impact on sensitive seafloors and multiple Zodiac launch platforms for efficient off-ship exploration. The vessel accommodates 154 guests in thoughtfully arranged cabins, many with private balconies, and includes dedicated spaces for learning and wellness, complementing the immersive expedition style characteristic of the Nat Geo-Lindblad brand.
With this charter in place, the company has signalled its intention to broaden the suite of Alaska voyages offered from 2027 onward, incorporating additional ports and scenic waterways traditionally associated with small-ship expedition travel. These will include elements such as travel through the Inside Passage via Grenville and Princess Royal Channels, calls at iconic natural features like Hubbard Glacier, and excursions into areas such as Misty Fjords, Endicott Arm and Tracy Arm, with ample opportunities for Zodiac cruises, kayaking and wildlife observation.
The decision to bring the Greg Mortimer into the Alaska fleet follows near four decades of Lindblad’s expedition operations in the region and reflects a strategic approach to growing capacity through vessel charters as primary fleet assets phase out. It is expected to support continued expansion of the line’s itinerary portfolio while building on its established expertise in remote-area expedition cruising.
