Viking Libra launched at Ancona, marking progress toward hydrogen-powered operations

The cruise vessel Viking Libra, under construction for Viking, has been floated out at the Fincantieri yard in Ancona, signifying the transition from primary hull assembly to the final stages of outfitting and systems integration.

The ship, scheduled for delivery toward the end of 2026, forms part of Viking’s ocean fleet expansion and is distinguished by its propulsion concept, which incorporates liquefied hydrogen and fuel cell technology. This configuration is intended to enable operation with zero emissions under certain conditions, allowing access to environmentally sensitive waters while aligning with broader industry efforts toward decarbonisation.

With a gross tonnage of approximately 54,300 and a length of 239 metres, the vessel is designed to accommodate up to 998 passengers in 499 staterooms, maintaining the operator’s established small-ship format.

The project reflects an ongoing collaboration between Viking and Fincantieri, a partnership initiated in 2012 and expanded through a series of confirmed orders and options that collectively represent a substantial construction programme extending across multiple units. Within this framework, the Ancona facility continues to serve as a principal production site, supported by ongoing investment in capacity, advanced manufacturing processes and digitalisation.

The float-out marks a standard milestone in shipbuilding practice, indicating that the vessel’s structural phase is largely complete and that attention now shifts to the installation and commissioning of onboard systems. Upon completion, Viking Libra is expected to enter service as the first cruise vessel of its type to integrate hydrogen-based propulsion at scale, representing a notable development in the evolution of passenger ship technology.
