CCL-Carnival Cruise Line marked a significant milestone on June 1st, 2026, with the inauguration of a series of enhancements at RelaxAway, Half Moon Cay, one of the company’s most visited private destinations in The Bahamas. The opening ceremony, led by Carnival Cruise Line President Christine Duffy, celebrated the completion of a development programme centred on expanded beachfront amenities and the long-anticipated arrival of a dedicated cruise pier.

The new pier represents the most consequential element of the project. For decades, guests arriving at Half Moon Cay were required to transfer ashore by tender, a process that limited operational flexibility and restricted access for the company’s largest vessels. With the new facility now in service, ships can berth directly alongside the island, improving the arrival experience and allowing a broader range of vessels, including Carnival’s Excel-class ships, to call regularly.

Christine Duffy indicated that the island’s natural appeal had long made it one of Carnival’s most popular destinations and that the addition of the pier would enable more guests to experience the island while significantly improving accessibility.

The upgraded destination now offers an expanded beachfront equipped with complimentary loungers and umbrellas, while upgraded cabanas and daybeds provide additional premium options for visitors seeking greater comfort. New food and beverage facilities have also been introduced, including Orchid Beach Grill and Hibiscus Beach Grill, complemented by venues such as Luna Tide Beach Bar, Stay Awhile Beach Shack and Lil’ Tiki Bar. These additions expand the range of dining and refreshment options available throughout the island.

Infrastructure improvements extend beyond the waterfront. A newly introduced tram system now connects key areas of the destination, while the scenic Papaya Pathway provides a dedicated walking route for guests wishing to explore the island on foot. Further upgrades have also been completed on the southern side of the cay, where public spaces and existing hospitality facilities have undergone refurbishment.

The first vessel to utilise the new pier was Carnival Sunrise, which arrived on the morning of June 1st and became the inaugural ship to berth directly at the upgraded destination. Additional calls quickly followed as the facility entered regular service.

The investment reflects a broader trend across the cruise sector, where operators continue to expand and enhance private destinations throughout the Caribbean. As cruise lines increasingly focus on exclusive shore experiences, developments such as the transformation of RelaxAway at Half Moon Cay illustrate the growing importance of destination infrastructure within modern cruise deployment strategies.
