AIDA Cruises is continuing to strengthen its sustainability strategy through a combination of digital energy management, expanded use of biofuels, increased shore power connectivity and innovation initiatives designed to support the long-term decarbonization of cruise operations. The company's latest measures focus on improving operational efficiency while preparing its fleet for future low-emission technologies.
A central element of the strategy is the reduction of energy consumption across the fleet through advanced digital technologies. All AIDA vessels are equipped with integrated energy management systems connected to a centralized data platform that continuously analyses operational and consumption data. Machine learning and artificial intelligence are used to identify opportunities for further efficiency improvements in voyage planning, vessel performance and fuel consumption.
Since 2023, the company has progressively introduced its Energy Optimization System (EOS) across the fleet. The digital platform supports crews by providing near real-time recommendations on optimizing onboard energy flows and selecting routes that minimize energy demand. The system evaluates a wide range of variables, including weather conditions, wind, vessel characteristics, engine performance and passenger numbers. According to AIDA Cruises, operational experience has demonstrated that EOS significantly reduces the energy required for propulsion and hotel operations while generating substantial cost savings. Senior Vice President Public Affairs, Communication & Sustainability Dirk Inger stated that the system illustrates how digitalization can translate operational data into practical recommendations, enabling crews to make more efficient decisions while supporting the fleet's long-term development.
The company is also expanding its use of alternative fuels. During 2025, more than 8,500 tonnes of ISCC EU-certified Bio-LNG were supplied to AIDAnova in Hamburg, Kiel and Zeebrugge. Produced from European biogas plants and supplied through a mass-balancing approach, the fuel supports compliance with FuelEU Maritime requirements and contributes to European and International Maritime Organization climate objectives. AIDA Cruises noted that biofuels can provide an important transitional solution while zero-emission fuels continue to be developed.
Alongside current biofuel initiatives, the company continues to participate in research programmes focused on future propulsion technologies. Through Carnival Maritime's decarbonization team, AIDA Cruises contributes to the CAMPFIRE alliance, which is developing renewable ammonia-based energy conversion and storage technologies, and to the HydroPoLEn research project, which is investigating hydrogen as a marine fuel for future combustion-engine propulsion systems. Inger indicated that wider adoption of e-fuels will depend on increased fuel availability, expanded production capacity, harmonized international regulations and commercially viable pricing.
AIDA Cruises has also continued to expand its use of shore power. After recording ~340 shore power connections in 2024 and around 440 in 2025, the company plans roughly 540 connections during 2026. Its vessels are currently capable of connecting to shore power in 17 European ports, including Hamburg, Warnemünde, Kiel, Southampton, Bergen, Oslo, Stockholm, Rotterdam, Copenhagen and Le Havre, representing approximately half of the company's Northern European port calls departing from Germany. Inger emphasized that further development of port-side infrastructure will be essential to maximize the environmental benefits of shore power both in Europe and globally.
Innovation remains another key pillar of the company's environmental strategy. The first application phase of the newly established AIDA Innovation Hub attracted more than 150 proposals from start-ups, technology companies, research institutions and industry partners focusing on decarbonization, sustainability and artificial intelligence. The shortlisted concepts will be presented to an expert jury in Rostock on September 16th, 2026, with the selected projects progressing to implementation studies or pilot testing aboard AIDA vessels.
