Garbage truck kills cruise passenger in Nassau

A garbage truck has run over and dragged a Canadian cruise passenger who has been ashore from Carnival Sensation in Nassau. The man was travelling with his family and received "serious injuries to his lower extremities and was pronounced dead on the scene.”

The driver told police that his brakes had failed as he had been entering a roundabout and he had swerved to avoid oncoming traffic. The company operating the garbage truck has not been identified.

The Canadian tourist has been dragged several feet while attempting to cross the street. The accident happened shortly after 2 PM on October 19 (Monday) on Baha Mar Boulevard.

Superintendent Craig Stubbs (officer in charge of the Traffic Division) said the garbage truck lost control and collided with a vehicle before striking the visitor.

“Our information is the garbage truck was travelling east in the southern lane in a dual carriageway on Weat Bay Street when the driver claimed he lost pressure in his brakes as he entered the roundabout,” Supt Stubbs said.

“He tried to slow the vehicle down, but collided with a 2013 Kia Sportage. He then crossed the sidewalk on the northern side and struck a Caucasian male attempting to cross the road. The male received serious injuries to his lower extremities and was pronounced dead on the scene.”

Supt Stubbs said it is too early to say if charges will be pressed against the driver of the garbage truck. However, he said, the driver is assisting police with their investigations.

He said after the investigations are concluded, his officers will meet with the Attorney General’s office to determine the next course of action.
