Abydos is a Nile River cruise port and an Ancient Egyptian city in Upper Egypt's Sohag Governorate, located approx 11 km (7 mi) west of the river (near the towns El Balyana and El Araba El Madfuna). Abydos is one of Egypt's most important archaeological sites, with numerous temples and tombs (burial sites for the pharaohs of the 1st to 13th dynasties).
As cruise port, Abydos is visited for the temple of Menmaatre Seti I, where can be seen the Abydos King List (aka Abydos Table) which has listed the names of 76 Egyptian pharaohs (from Menes to Ramesses I). Other important sites are the Umm El Qa'ab necropolis, Great Osiris Temple, Ramesses II Temple.
