Gan and the Former RAF Base

This is the simplest choice for passengers who do not want a long transfer. Most sightseeing is on level terrain, although shade can be limited and the tropical heat makes even modest walks tiring.

Drive the Connected Islands to Hithadhoo

Allow about 2.5–4 hours. Practical independently with a taxi or arranged vehicle.

A drive from Gan through Feydhoo and Maradhoo to Hithadhoo is one of the best ways to see how Addu differs from a resort island. The causeways and coastal road pass local neighborhoods, mosques, small shops, cafés and stretches of lagoon shoreline.

Rather than treating Hithadhoo as a single major attraction, use the journey as a scenic local-island tour and combine it with Addu Nature Park. Agree with the driver on waiting time and the return to the tender point before setting out.

Addu Nature Park

Allow 2.5–3.5 hours including transport from Gan. Independent with pre-arranged transport.

At the northern end of Hithadhoo, Addu Nature Park protects the Eydhigali Kilhi wetlands and Koattey area. Visitors can see mangroves, freshwater wetlands, birdlife and coastal vegetation from roads, paths and viewing structures. White terns are a characteristic sight in Addu.

The park is around a 20–30 minute drive from the Gan area under normal conditions. Walking, cycling, buggy rides and canoeing have been offered within the park, but activity availability should be confirmed locally rather than assumed for a cruise call.

Diving and Lagoon Trips

Allow at least 3–4 hours. Organized excursion recommended.

Addu is particularly strong for scuba diving, with reefs, manta encounters and the British Loyalty wreck among its best-known underwater attractions. The wreck is reached by boat and is a scuba-diving site rather than a casual shore-snorkeling stop.

For a cruise call, use a ship excursion or an established local dive operator that understands the ship's departure time. Boat transfers, equipment preparation and sea conditions make this a poor activity to improvise after arriving ashore.

Beaches and Nature

Addu has attractive lagoon and ocean shorelines, but not every stretch of coast is a managed swimming beach. Reef, currents and access conditions vary, and entry to resort beaches should not be assumed. Passengers mainly interested in swimming or snorkeling are better served by a confirmed local boat trip, dive/snorkel operator or ship-arranged beach activity.

When an Organized Excursion Makes More Sense
