Independent sightseeing is easy if passengers land in downtown Beaufort. Calls using a berth in Port Royal or another landing require a transfer, so confirm the ship’s arrangements before going ashore.

Getting from the Cruise Landing

Beaufort primarily receives small cruise vessels. Landing arrangements can vary between the Downtown Marina and waterfront area, Port Royal, or another locally assigned berth. When passengers disembark near Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, Bay Street and the historic district are immediately accessible on foot.

The city currently lists the public day dock at Waterfront Park as closed until further notice. This does not necessarily determine the berth used by an individual cruise ship, but passengers should rely on the ship’s instructions for the actual gangway, tender landing or shuttle point.

If the ship uses Port Royal rather than downtown Beaufort, walking into Beaufort is not practical during a port call. Use the cruise line’s transfer or arrange a taxi or rideshare. Local public transport is not the most convenient option for time-sensitive sightseeing.

Best Ways to Spend the Call

Explore Beaufort’s Historic District

This is the simplest independent option. Walk through Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park, browse Bay Street and continue into the quiet residential streets of the Old Point neighborhood. Highlights include moss-draped live oaks, historic churches and well-preserved homes. Allow 2–3 hours at an unhurried pace.

Visit the Reconstruction Era Sites

The Reconstruction Era National Historical Park visitor center occupies the Old Beaufort Firehouse on Craven Street, close to the waterfront. Nearby sites associated with Robert Smalls include Tabernacle Baptist Church and his gravesite. Exhibits, access and ranger programs can vary, so check locally before structuring the day around a timed program. Allow approximately 1–2 hours.

Take a Guided History Tour

Walking, minibus and golf-cart tours are useful for visitors who want interpretation or prefer less walking. Typical tours concentrate on the historic district, Reconstruction history, local architecture and filming locations. Most last around 1–2 hours. Reserve in advance when the port call is short, and confirm that the meeting point is within walking distance of the ship’s landing.

Hunting Island State Park

Hunting Island lies approximately 26 km (16.0 mi) east of downtown Beaufort. It combines Atlantic beach, maritime forest, marsh scenery and a historic lighthouse. Allow about 35–45 minutes each way by road, depending on traffic, plus at least 2 hours in the park.

There is no convenient time-sensitive public transport from the cruise landing. A ship excursion, prearranged private tour or rental vehicle is preferable. Confirm current lighthouse access separately, as maintenance, weather or capacity restrictions can affect entry.

Penn Center and St. Helena Island

The Penn Center National Historic Landmark District provides important context on Gullah culture, education after emancipation and the Reconstruction era. It is on St. Helena Island, roughly 16–24 km (10.0–15.0 mi) from downtown depending on the route and site visited. Combine it with Hunting Island only on a sufficiently long call and with prearranged transport. An organized excursion is the most practical choice.

1. Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park: Begin at the cruise landing or the ship’s downtown drop-off and follow the riverfront promenade.
2. Bay Street: Walk through the compact shopping and dining area facing the waterfront.
3. Old Beaufort Firehouse: Stop at the downtown visitor center for Reconstruction Era National Historical Park when open.
4. Beaufort Arsenal: Continue to the historic Arsenal complex and visitor information area on Craven Street.
5. St. Helena’s Anglican Church: Walk through the shaded church grounds while respecting services and private events.
6. Tabernacle Baptist Church: See the church associated with Robert Smalls and his nearby gravesite.
7. Old Point neighborhood: Follow Craven Street toward the waterfront through several blocks of historic homes and large live oaks.
8. Waterfront Park: Return along Bay Street, leaving time to reach the gangway, tender or shuttle collection point.

The route can be shortened by omitting the Old Point loop. Most historic houses are private residences; view them from public sidewalks and do not enter gardens or driveways.

Practical Tips

• Verify the day’s landing and return point before leaving the ship, especially if transport is provided from Port Royal.
• Carry water and sun protection. Summer conditions can be hot, humid and stormy even when the walking distance is modest.
• Wear comfortable shoes for uneven sidewalks, tree roots and occasional brick paving.
• Taxis and rideshares may be less plentiful than in a large city. Arrange the return journey in advance for Hunting Island, Penn Center or other Sea Island destinations.
• Allow at least 30 minutes of extra return time for local travel and more when using tenders or visiting the barrier islands.
