Getting from the Cruise Port

Tenders generally land at the end of Binz pier. From there, passengers walk directly onto the Strandpromenade beside the Kurhaus and Kurplatz. Restaurants, shops, the beach and the principal streets of the resort are within a few minutes on foot.

Binz has local and regional buses, taxis, conventional trains and the historic narrow-gauge Rasender Roland railway. Its main railway station and the smaller Binz LB station used by the steam railway are in different locations, so check which station your journey requires.

Best Ways to Spend Your Time

Explore Binz and Its Seafront

Allow 2–3 hours for the pier, Kurplatz, Kurhaus, white resort villas and a relaxed walk along the beach promenade. Binz’s 3.2 km (2.0 mi) promenade is largely level, but there is no need to walk its entire length during a short call. This is the easiest independent option and leaves considerable flexibility around tender times.

Visit Schmachter See

The lake lies behind the center of Binz and offers a quieter contrast to the Baltic waterfront. Paths, landscaped areas and viewpoints around the eastern shore can be combined with the town walk. Allow around 45–75 minutes for the lake section, depending on how far you continue.

Granitz Hunting Lodge

This hilltop lodge stands in the forest south of Binz. The seasonal Jagdschloss Express normally begins and ends near Binz pier and allows passengers to interrupt the journey for a visit. The Rasender Roland and local buses can also form part of the journey, followed by a walk through the forest.

Allow approximately 3–4 hours from Binz. Access involves slopes, and the lodge’s panoramic central tower has a long spiral staircase, making this option less suitable for passengers with limited mobility. Verify return departures before setting out.

Prora

Prora, approximately 6 km (3.7 mi) north of central Binz, combines a long Baltic beach with the vast former resort complex and several visitor attractions. The Documentation Centre presents the history of the complex, while the nearby Rügen Natural Heritage Centre has a treetop path and observation tower.

Bus, regional train or taxi is more practical than walking from Binz. Allow at least 3–4 hours and choose one principal attraction rather than trying to cover the entire area.

Rasender Roland Railway

The historic steam railway links Binz with Putbus, Sellin, Baabe and Göhren. A return ride to one nearby seaside resort can be enjoyable during a longer call, but the railway is relatively slow. Check the current timetable first and select a train that provides a comfortable margin for the final tender.

5. Schmachter See: Reach the landscaped eastern shore and follow part of the lakeside path.
6. Hauptstraße: Return toward the sea through the pedestrian-oriented center.
7. Binz pier: Finish at the tender landing.

The route can be shortened easily in poor weather or when tender time is limited. The promenade itself is suitable for many visitors with reduced mobility, although beach access may involve steps or soft sand.

Beach Time

Binz has a broad sandy beach immediately beside the promenade, making a beach visit possible without transport. Swimming conditions depend on weather and water temperature, and beach facilities are more extensive during the summer season. Keep enough time to change and return through the tender queue.

Longer Rügen Excursions

Jasmund National Park and the Chalk Cliffs

The Königsstuhl chalk cliffs and national park visitor center are well beyond walking distance from Binz. Reaching them independently normally requires a combination of train or bus services, or a taxi and national park shuttle. The final access is controlled to protect the national park, and private vehicles cannot drive directly to the visitor center.

Allow most of the port call for this trip. An organized excursion is preferable when the call is short, public transport connections are awkward or tender timing is uncertain.

Island Highlights by Scenic Drive

A guided tour or prearranged vehicle can combine selected Rügen sights such as the chalk coast, Sassnitz, Prora or one of the southeastern seaside resorts. Avoid attempting too many stops: road traffic can be slow during the summer, and attractions are spread across the island.
